I Essential
Note: "Essential" means here "you should have a copy on your desk";
"very useful" means "you could profitably have in your personal library a copy of some books in this section";
"basic reference books" means "you should at least know where these works are found in your college and/or university library."
A Bible in English: one of the more useful is The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocryphal / Deuterocanonical Books in the NRSV translation (Oxford University Press, 1991). While you might use the NAB, NIV, NJB and REB, you should note that no edition of the NIV has the deuterocanonical books. Please do not use Good News for Modern Man (=TEV).
Denziger-Schönmetzer, Enchiridion symbolorum etc., 36th ed. (Herder 1976); DS is the classic collection of excerpts from Church documents, arranged chronologically and in the original language. P. Hünnerman edited a 37th ed. (Herder, 1991), which includes documents down to December 1988 and in which a German translation faces the original texts (=DH). This same edition has also appeared with an Italian translation facing the original texts (Edizioni Dehoniane [Bologna], 1995, and with a French translation facing the original texts (Cerf. [Paris], 1996).
J. Neuner & J. Dupuis (edd.), The Christian Faith, 6th ed. (Theological Publications in India - Alba House - HarperCollins, 1996). ND is the best version available in English of key excerpts, arranged systematically, from Church documents; this new edition is notably expanded and updated to May 1995.
The Documents of Vatican II: Flannery's edition, although the translation is not always quite accurate, is preferable to Abbott's, inter alia because it includes the post-conciliar documents. See also the original Latin text and English translation in N.P. Tanner (ed.) Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils, 2nd vol. (Sheed and Ward - Georgetown University Press, 1990) 820-1135.

Perhaps one should add the caution that one can only use Kittel while keeping in mind the corrective critique of someone like James Barr in his The Semantics of Biblical Language (Oxford University Press). And even for a Catholic reading public, a good book giving Reformation and Protestant creeds and confessions would be helpful. (PPK)
